HEU INDEPENDENT project
INDEPENDENT will address the main barriers for sustainable market adoption of Demand-side Flexibility (DSF) services targeted for buildings and industrial sites with an Integrated Development and Operations Platform (IDOP), also called the INDEPENDENT Platform.
Simplified implementation of systems
IDOP will be a major breakthrough enabling modular development and plug-and-play deployment of standard-compliant Customer and Aggregator Energy Management Systems (CEMS, AEMS).
IDOP will cover 90% of the flexibility available in buildings and industrial sites and provide advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for automated resource modelling, probabilistic forecasting, optimal control, and automated integration of legacy systems.
This will significantly increase the monetary and environmental benefits (e.g., reduced energy costs and CO2 emissions) while at the same time reduce the development, deployment, and operational costs, making Demand-side flexibility management (DSFM) a sustainable business at a large scale.
Compliance with the latest DSFM standards
This is mandatory as standards ensure interoperability between energy management systems (EMS), aggregators and markets, and facilitate the replication in a cost-efficient manner. The key standard families for DSFM are the European EN 50491-12 (its international counterpart IEC 64302), and the international IEC 62746.

Smart Com's role in the project
Smart Com is responsible for design and integraiton of the DevSecOps toolbox to facilitate modular development and plug-and-play instantiation of the INDEPENDENT solutions tailored to specifics of various deployments.
Smart Com is also leading the workpackage on piloting and validation, coordinating and managing the activities on integration with legacy systems, planning and deployment of two phases of pilots, and system validation with a focus on market readiness, sclability, and replicability.
Would you like more information about the INDEPENDENT project?
We will be happy to answer your questions. We would also be glad to receive your initiatives for collaboration on development and research projects.
Project partners
The project brings together 14 partners, including four aggregators, seven EMS service companies, and two major home appliance manufacturers that will adopt IDOP-based solutions into their offerings. The IDOP-based CEMS and AEMS will be demonstrated and qualified in large-scale pilots in four countries.
