ICT technology for assisting vulnerable population groups
The purpose of the ESSENCE project, which was co-funded by the H2020 programme, was to establish an empathic platform for personal monitoring, encouragement, enrichment and assistance to the elderly and children in their environment.
Active and safe coexistance
With the H2020 ESSENCE project, we transformed the experiences from the COVID-19 pandemic into a significant opportunity that leverages technology for the further development of services aimed at vulnerable population groups: independent elderly people and primary school children in lower grades, while addressing the acute problem of isolation in the home environment during the pandemic.
The project partners aimed to contribute to the public health response to the epidemic and improve readiness for future emergencies by establishing a new home-care model based on stimulation, remote monitoring, tele-assistance and social connectivity between users, their families and relevant experts in the fields of healthcare, social care and education.
We built upon the results of the H2020 MoveCare project and applied an interactive optimization process between two pillars – technology transfer of selected successful MoveCare modules and pilot testing with target users as a feedback loop in iterative development – with the final goal of achiving CE certification ad rapid market entry.
Main components of the platform
The ESSENCE platform consists of three main components that offer various modules and cystems control for managin user profiles.
With ESSENCE we promoted multi-level user empowerment: through empathic feedback ailmed at increasing engagement and reducing stress; and by sending alerts about potential risks to family members, as well as healthcare and educational professionals, with the goal of early detection of possible user issues (physical, cognitive, social) and care planning.
